Local residents in the Burrig district of Leverkusen on Wednesday shared their reactions, stories, and fears after the explosion at the nearby Chempark industrial complex the day before, which has left two dead and others missing and injured.

“It still really stinks here today, in Reindorf it does to a bit but here it does more, and this morning at our apartment it did too, whether it’s dangerous or not I don’t know but a bit of fear is there, also due to him [his son], due to children, my girlfriend is afraid,” said one resident, Sasha.

Resident Inge said she was concerned after city authorities urged people not to eat fruit and vegetables they had grown. “If they are saying one shouldn’t eat fruits or food or anything from the garden or so, then there must be something, and I just hope it’s not something really bad,” she said.

Another, Marogot, felt much more at ease with the situation, explaining that “I have no fear because everything was brought under control very quickly, the people took control quickly.”

“But I must say that today I had the feeling that I smoked. If that’s just my imagination I don’t know but no, everything is fine, what should we do? Fear brings nothing,” she added.

At least 31 people were injured and two people killed in the incident. Rescue teams are still looking for five people missing, who are presumed dead.

SOT, Marogot, Resident (German): “I have no fear because everything was brought under control very quickly, the people took control quickly. It was a bad explosion but I must say I have no fear.”

SOT, Marogot, Resident (German): “Yesterday I did not go out, we were not supposed to, but I must say that today I had the feeling that I smoked. If that’s just my imagination I don’t know but no, everything is fine, what should we do? Fear brings nothing.”

SOT, Sasha, Resident (German): “It still really stinks here today, in Reindorf it does to a bit but here it does more, and this morning at our apartment it did too, whether its dangerous or not I don’t know but a bit of fear is there, also due to him [son], due to children, my girlfriend is afraid.”

SOT, Manfred Blaufuss, Resident (German): “We were in our apartment around 9.30, and suddenly, I was sitting in my room on the computer, I heard there was a huge bomb, a huge bang, I think two one after the other, and everything shook and then I looked out the window to see what had happened somewhere, and when I looked out the living room window I saw that behind the house here there was a huge plume of smoke, and then it was clear to us that something happened garbage incineration plant because it was right behind it.”

SOT, Manfred Blaufuss, Resident (German): “Fear, no, we have grandchildren who we go often with to playgrounds, and we will likely not do it in the next days because we do not know yet how the precipitation was affected by the smoke, but I left my car outside, there was nothing on it, today we cleaned the balcony and there was no soot or anything like that. The clouds went directly away from Leverkusen and we have no problems from it.”

SOT, Inge, Resident (German): “They was a crazy bang and we all thought ‘what was that then’ and everything was black and grey and we looked over and didn’t know what it was, but then the news came that it was the garbage plant there that exploded so strongly.”

SOT, Inge, Resident (German): “Yes of course one is afraid, but you know I’m at an age where one doesn’t have these fears, but I feel afraid for the young people who don’t know at all what exactly is there and what consequences will be, for the animals, for everything, and that’s the thing, and if they are saying one shouldn’t eat fruits or food or anything from the garden or so, then there must be something, and I just hope it’s not something really bad.”
