Hundreds of people packed into Saint Peter’s Square to hear the Angelus from Pope Francis on Sunday in Vatican City.

The Pope called upon Catholics to have more children saying there was a current ‘demographic winter.’

“He (Pope) said it: enough with one or two children; we should have more, react. We are not left with just one or two. The family must be large because it is very important,” said Ana Maria Ramirez from Peru in agreeance with the Bishop of Rome.

Héctor Villanueva, a citizen of Peru, was confident that things would change for the better in 2022, saying, “Things are going to change, and this 2022 is going to be better. But our faith also has to be demonstrated by praying for others. Because we are all in the same problem together. And if we are not part of the solution, we are part of the problem. By praying and believing in God, everything will improve.”

The pontiff greeted all the pilgrims coming not only from Italy but also from different countries, such as Poles, Brazilians, Colombians, or Peruvians, as well as families, parish groups, and various associations.

SOUNDBITES:

Pope speaking (Italian): “Sometimes, it gets to physical and moral violence. This breaks the harmony and kills the family.”

Pope speaking (Italian): “There is a demographic winter. It seems that many have lost the illusion of having children. Many couples prefer not to have children or only with one. Think about this. It’s a tragedy.” *UPSOUND*

SOT, Hector Villanueva, Visitor from Peru (Spanish): “Things are going to change and this 2022 is going to be better. But our faith also has to be demonstrated by praying for others. Because we are all in the same problem together. And if we are not part of the solution, we are part of the problem. By praying and believing in God, everything will improve.”

SOT, Ana Maria Ramirez, Visitor from Peru (Spanish): “We should take into account the pandemic that we are experiencing. Let’s get out of this. But always, I repeat, faith is the most important thing.”
