India: Chennai hit with severe flooding following heavy rain

Local residents could be seen wading and driving through floodwaters on Friday in Chennai after heavy rains pounded the city the afternoon prior.

A red alert has been issued by authorities in the districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, and Chinglepet.

As a precautionary measure, the state government has declared a holiday for government offices, educational institutions including schools and colleges on Friday in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet districts.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted that Chennai and parts of northern coastal Tamil Nadu, and adjoining areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh, will continue to witness very heavy rainfall activity for the next three days.

SOT, Jagannathan, Local resident (Tamil): “It is an unexpected rain, no one has expected this. It rained only for 6 hours but all our houses are flooded. Every year we are facing the same issue, water levels have reached the houses of upper floors and submerged houses of people living on lower floors.”

SOT, Jagannathan, Local resident (Tamil): “We have raised complaints with the authorities many times, but no one has visited our place, we have given several petitions to the state chief minister, but not even the district authorities have visited the place and cleared this waterlogging. It is unfortunate even the state chief minister’s constituency situation is like this.”

SOT, Baskar, Local resident (Tamil): “We started our day on a sunny day, but suddenly the weather changed and it rained so badly. People of Chennai didn’t expect this rain and we were not prepared for this rain. Due to the rains all the streets were waterlogging and there was heavy traffic in the city, I reached home around 3am.”
