Mexico: Long queues for COVID testing as Mexico City battles Omicron surge

Residents of Mexico City were queuing at major testing stations set up in the city, to get a COVID-19 test, as seen in footage taken on Thursday.

“The process was fast, the wait for the tests was long and tedious,” said a local taking the test, Edson Amador. “I think we are going too far. The health protocols are being forgotten, there are people without face masks, people who are not getting vaccinated, we are not caring about all this COVID,” he added.

Cases have been rising fast in the Mexican capital which registered 60,552 new cases in a single day, based on data published by the Mexican Ministry of Health, which marks a new record since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

According to the data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has registered a total number of 4,495,310 COVID cases. The overall related death toll now stands at 302,112, according to the same source.

SOT, Maria Isabel Rivera Gonzalez, Resident (Spanish): “I feel that it is the responsibility of the population, not so much of the government. They have already told us for three years about how we have to take care of ourselves, what we have to do.”

SOT, Maria Isabel Rivera Gonzalez, Resident (Spanish): “I have already taken a COVID test and I have come out negative but we have to take it as they are explaining to us at the government, in the news, how we should take care of ourselves, what we have to do, how we have to put on the mask, how we have to protect ourselves and people don’t understand.”

SOT, Maria Isabel Rivera Gonzalez, Resident (Spanish): “I feel that it is because of the Christmas holidays [and] January 6 (Three Kings Day, holiday). If you went to a market on January 6 and the same ones who were selling without face masks, smoking, drinking coffee or punch, selling street food. So there it was and if you don’t protect yourself or they didn’t protect themselves, one infects twenty.”

SOT, Maria Isabel Rivera Gonzalez, Resident (Spanish): “That the population understands that the responsibility lies with oneself. We have to take care of our children, our young people, make them aware that if they go out, they protect themselves.”
