Mexico: Migrant caravan resumes trek amid health concerns

A caravan of around 3,000 migrants continued their journey towards the US border after a brief pause despite health concerns, as seen in Nuevo Milenio Valdivia, Southern Mexico, on Monday.
Many migrant children have gotten sick on the journey and were carried by their parents. Some travellers have turned back amid high temperatures and dangerous conditions.
“It has been complicated because of the food, water and everything, I wanted to go back, but I’m going to go forward, because I want the best for my child, they told me he had phlegm in his lungs, I have taken him to the hospital but they almost didn’t give me a solution for anything,” said Dayana Pequis, a Honduran migrant.
The group of Central Americans has reported many health problems and injuries from the walk and have received no support from local governments in the towns they pass through.
Migrants left a week ago from the municipality of Tapachula, and aim to reach Mexico City to protest because of the delay in asylum applications processing.
Among the members of the caravan, mostly from Central American countries and Haiti, there are also children, elderly people, pregnant women, people with disabilities and members of the LGTBQ + community, who have suffered threats in their countries of origin.
