Mexico: National Guard block advance of migrant caravan

Hundreds of migrants from Central America travelling in a caravan for the last 20 days towards the US through southern Mexico stopped trucks in Santiago Niltepec asking to be allowed to travel with them, as seen on Friday.

Families were seen trying to get on the back of trucks along with their possessions while other migrants made room for them.

The Mexican National Guard blocked the road attempting to prevent the passage of trucks and other vehicles transporting migrants.

“The municipal presidents wanted to help us move, and the federal government said no, it did not allow the municipal areas to help women and children,” said Irineo Mujica, activist and leader of the caravan.

According to local reports, hundreds of migrants regularised their situation through the National Migration Institute (INM) and left the caravan in the past few days.

Mujica continued, “They deceive them by giving them a card. They are supposedly giving them one, but no one is free. They keep them in closed shelters against their will. Where is it written in the law that they can be kept locked up?”

Among the members of the caravan, mostly from Central American countries and Haiti, there are also children, elderly, pregnant women, people with disabilities and members of the LGTBQ+ community, who have suffered threats in their countries of origin.
