President of the Olympic Organising Committee Hashimoto Seiko and Director General of the Organising Committee Muto Toshiro answered the questions of journalists at the closing press conference in Tokyo on Sunday.
“We wanted to create the best stage to create to performance of the athletes that was our goal and in IOC session I received a “standing ovation” as you mentioned. This is not only for Tokyo 2020 organising committee but the citizens of Tokyo and Japan and athletes who accepted this games and also those staff members who strived for the success of this games and the volunteers. The standing ovation was for all of them,” stated Hashimoto Seiko.
The main press centre was decorated in Olympic blue flags and filled with several dozen members of the press. President Hashimoto Seiko admitted that not everything had gone smoothly, but that they were learning constantly. She also announced the upcoming Paralympics.
Muto Toshiro, Director General of the Organising Committee, called the COVID-19 countermeasures the biggest challenge for the Olympic Games. He said there had been experiences of violations of the countermeasures, but they were punished with strict sanctions.
“COVID-19 countermeasures were the biggest challenge for this games in Tokyo 2020,” said Muto Toshiro.
The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games is taking place on the same day. The XVI Summer Paralympic Games were scheduled to be held in Tokyo from August 24 to September 5 2021.

SOT, Hashimoto Seiko, President of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee (Japanese): “The Tokyo 2020 organising committee wanted to create a stage for the athletes, we wanted to create the best stage to create to performance of the athletes that was our goal and in IOC session I received a ‘standing ovation’ as you mentioned. SOT, Muto Toshiro, Director general of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee (Japanese): “COVID-19 countermeasures were the biggest challenge for this games in Tokyo 2020 and what we have pointed out we do understand and we recognised what happened but most athletes were keeping themselves in the bubbles according to the playbook. Their actions were based on the playbooks, unfortunately there were some violations of the playbooks that is a fact but we took very strict actions against those violations.”
SOT, Hashimoto Seiko, President of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee (Japanese): “I would like to share that with you after the Paralympic Games but as of now whether we have not succeeded one hundred percent or not, there may be some things what we could have done and may be we could have done a cheaper and swifter operation. So many of these things are still open challenges that need to be worked upon and we need to never stop learning.”
