Hairdressers in Chiclayo have started a campaign to collect both human and pet hair donated by residents to build nets to contain the oil spill caused by the recent Tonga volcano eruption, as seen in San Jose, Chiclayo, on Friday.
“I think we should all do our bit and try to prevent this stain that destroys, destroys our land,” said Wilson Alarcon, a resident while donating his hair.
The hair collected will be sent to a group of engineers in Lima currently working on ways to limit the damage from the oil spill and clean Peru’s beaches.
“We are going to send everything to the city of Lima so that our environmental engineering colleagues, environmentalists, passionate or those who love their environment, can make the barriers and also clean those beaches,” said Cristina Calle, an environmental engineer.
Once assembled together, the ‘hair’ nets will be used in an effort to contain the oil spill and prevent additional contamination along the coast of Peru.
