Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his indignation with the tragedy at the Listvyazhnaya mine during a meeting on the situation in the Kemerovo region’s coal industry held in Moscow on Thursday.
“The management of the mine had systematically taken measures to hide the facts of excessive methane gas levels in the mine,” said Putin based on a preliminary report adding, “the results of toxic gas sensors were falsified.”
Putin questioned the quality of execution of instructions given after the accident at the Raspadskaya mine in the Kemerovo region.
“People need to support their families and they take risks. And we all have to create such conditions together that there is no need to take risks. That was the point of our decisions in 2010,” he said referring to measures introduced after the deadly 2010 Raspadskaya mine explosion in Mezhdurechensk.
According to the latest information, 51 people, including 46 miners and five rescue workers who went in after the initial blast, died in the accident that occurred on Thursday in the Kemerovo region.
There were 285 people in the mine at the time of the accident, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said. During the rescue operations, 237 miners were evacuated.
The Listvyazhnaya mine director and his first deputy are being held in custody, according to the Russian Investigative Committee. The investigators believe the deadly accident was most likely caused by a methane explosion.
On May 8 and 9, 2010, two methane explosions occurred in the Raspadskaya mine in Mezhdurechensk. The victims of the tragedy were 91 people, and about 100 more were injured. The bodies of 11 victims were never found.

SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President: “People need to support their families and they take risks. And we all have to create such conditions together that there is no need to take risks. That was the point of our decisions in 2010 [after the explosion at the Raspadskaya mine].”
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President: “Of course, the Investigative Committee, the Prosecutor’s Office, will investigate [the causes of the accident] in detail. And no one will allow any unsubstantiated accusations. But still these statements or the Investigative Committee preliminary report on the work [of the mine] - systematic measures were taken to conceal the fact of excessive gassing, to falsify this data. After all, someone was doing it. Why? To export more out of the mine? Why? What was the result? Tragic. Now we are all sitting here, all dejected.”
