Russia: Rescuers conduct search operation at scene of Kemerovo mine accident

Rescuers conducted a search operation at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine in the Russian Siberian region of Kemerovo, where a deadly accident took the lives of 51 people, the Kuzbass government announced on Saturday.

Footage shows rescuers checking equipment before the operation and going to the mine’s entrance.

A reconnaissance unit already reportedly advanced two kilometres into the mine, searching for victims of the accident. Eleven bodies have already been returned to the surface, including three rescuers. Two of the miners have been identified.

The operation’s headquarters at the scene said the cause for the accident was likely a methane explosion, as evidenced by damage inside the mine and a failure of all its systems.

According to the latest information, 51 people, including 46 miners and five rescue workers who went in after the initial blast, died in the accident that occurred on Thursday in the Kemerovo region.

Thirty-eight miners and 11 rescuers are currently hospitalised, according to Tsivilev, who said one rescuer had a head injury and the other 10 suffered from gas poisoning.

There were 285 people in the mine at the time of the accident, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said. During the rescue operations, 237 miners were evacuated.

The Listvyazhnaya mine director and his first deputy are being held in custody, according to the Russian Investigative Committee. The investigators believe the deadly accident was most likely caused by a methane explosion.
