Rescuer Aleksandr Zakoryashin, who survived the Listvyazhnaya coal mine accident, commented on his state inside an ambulance on his way to the hospital on Friday.

According to him, he was feeling ‘great’ right after saving.

“You are the ones who really save people, but what about me? I fought for my life; everyone would have done this in my place,” said Zakoryashin.

As it was stated later in a clinic, Zakoryashin’s condition is serious and unstable at the moment due to hypothermia of the second stage and dehydration.

As the events unfolded in the Listvyazhnaya coal mine on Thursday, Zakovryashin arrived at the scene as part of one of the emergency medical response teams. He spent the night in the mine and managed to get to the surface and signal for help on Friday.

According to the latest info, 51 people, including 46 miners and five rescue workers who went in after the initial blast, died in the accident that occurred on Thursday in the Kemerovo region.

Thirty-eight miners and 11 rescuers are currently hospitalised, according to Tsivilev, who said one rescuer had a head injury and the other 10 suffered from gas poisoning.

There were 285 people in the mine at the time of the accident, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said. During the rescue operations, 237 miners were evacuated.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the Listvyazhnaya mine director and his first deputy are being held in custody. The investigators believe a methane explosion most likely caused the deadly accident.
