Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) representative Nikolai Medvedev said the search operation ‘does not stop for a minute’ at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine in the Siberian region of Kemerovo, Sunday.
“The work does not stop for a minute. Some departments are located in the mine near the drain, some departments enter the mine for air sampling, surface departments record the change in the gas situation point by point,” he said.
Kemerovo Governor Sergei Tsivilyov said 64 people are now hospitalised, including four in serious condition. He added rescuers continue to monitor the state of the mine closely as the situation inside remains dangerous.
According to the latest information, 51 people, including 46 miners and five rescue workers who went in after the initial blast, died in the accident that occurred on Thursday in the Kemerovo region.
There were 285 people in the mine at the time of the accident, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said. During the rescue operations, 237 miners were evacuated.
The Listvyazhnaya mine director and his first deputy are being held in custody, according to the Russian Investigative Committee. The investigators believe the deadly accident was most likely caused by a methane explosion.
