Works to install several safety nets to prevent the collapse of a huge rock above the village of Gerb in Lleida began on Friday.
Footage shows the cracked rock as a helicopter flies over it with great precision to supply materials to a group of workers waiting at the top of the Penya de l’Espígol.
The group will install a protective mesh and several anchor points to prevent the rocks from falling on the housing area in the event of a landslide.
“The work we are going to carry out is quite complicated for two reasons. The first is because it is difficult to get to the site. It is a difficult place to access. In addition, we are faced with a rock that has moved and is a high risk. So the work we have to do is very specialised and quite complex when it comes to carrying it out,” said Josep Maria Caba, head of the project.
According to local reports, the work will cost around 270,000 euros (306,000 US dollars).

SOT, Estefania Rufach, Mayoress of Os de Balaguer-Gerb (Spanish): “It is already a peace of mind because you see that the works are starting, we didn’t know the exact day, but we already have all the workers here and it gives you a peace of mind to see that they are starting to act and avoid this possible fall.”
