Damascus residents reacted, on Wednesday, to the visit of United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan to the Syrian capital a day earlier.
Opinions were optimistic, with some hoping the visit would help improve the country’s economic situation while pushing the Syrian-Gulf relations forward, to bring them back to their previous state before the Syrian war.
“There is no doubt that this visit, which came after a diplomatic rupture that lasted for more than 10 years, gives a clear indication of the return of diplomatic relations with Arab countries alongside general diplomatic relations in the region. This visit is a prelude to other visits, the most important would be the [visit] of Riyadh [representatives] and their return to Syria,” resident Mustafa Rostom said.
“I hope that [the visit of the Emirati Foreign Minister] will be a good start for our country and all Arab countries, eventually we are one nation and brotherhood, and we hope that we won’t have any differences between us at all, as this is not in our interest as Arabs and Syrians,” added Hassan al-Daher, another resident.
“We ask them to push on America, which imposed unjust sanctions on us, to lift the sanctions on these poor people,” said Osama Shabab, also from Damascus.
On Tuesday, United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, for the first time since the beginning of the Syrian war in 2011.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Hassan al-Daher, local resident (Arabic): “I hope that [the visit of the Emirati Foreign Minister] will be a good start for our country and all Arab countries, eventually we are one nation and brothers, and we hope that we won’t have any differences between us at all, as this is not in our interest as Arabs and Syrians. This visit must be a good beginning for our country, the beginning of development, the beginning of lifting the embargo on Syria, and this step is considered very positive, God willing, Syria will regain security and safety and revive its relation with the Arab brothers, we are in the end brothers and one people.”
SOT, Osama Shabab, local resident (Arabic): “The visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates is a good step, God willing, and hopefully [other] Gulf states will also make the right choice, they were not fair to us, and now they know that Syria is the heart of all Arab countries, and I know that the visit of the foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates is a successful step, hopefully, and hopefully all Gulf [countries] will return to us, we ask them to put pressure on America, which imposes unjust sanctions on us, to lift the sanctions on these poor people. God willing, [relations] will return with all Arab countries. And Syria is for sure the basis for everything in the Arab world.”
SOT, Mustafa Rostom, lawyer (Arabic): “There is no doubt that this visit, which came after a diplomatic rupture that lasted for more than ten years, gives a clear indication of the return of diplomatic relations with Arab countries alongside general diplomatic relations in the region. This visit is a prelude to other visits, the most important would be the [visit] of Riyadh [representatives] and their return to Syria. This will not happen without the return of the [representatives] of Cairo, which will certainly precede its return [the return of diplomatic relations with] Riyadh. The UAE had a middle position on the crisis, if it is true, and it was clear that the return would be through it. As for the American statement of displeasure with the visit yesterday, it is a political statement, however, the reality is that the visit took place with American consent or American advice.”
