At least three people have died due to the massive forest fire that continued to burn in Manavgat, in southern Turkey, on Thursday.
Houses in the Evrenleryavsi village were seen still on fire while firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames.
Huseyin Turan, a local volunteer, said “just as we entered the village, people were already fleeing. They all had to leave the village while leaving their animals behind. Firefighters can’t reach (the area), helicopters cannot intervene either. You can see the fire is big, it is massive. The blaze cannot be controlled, and all living things are perishing. The forest is gone anyways, the whole of Manavgat is gone.”
Locals on site appeared visibly shocked and in distress, with some crying looking at their burned-down properties.
The mayor of Antalya, Muhittin Bocek, said firefighters are investigating if the fires started due to arson. Hot weather and strong winds have been fanning the fires, leading to the evacuation of dozens of villages.
SOT, Huseyin Turan, Local volunteer (Turkish): “We got out, and just as we entered the village, people were already fleeing.
SOT, Mahmut Demir, Local volunteer (Turkish): “We saw fires (before), but not like this. May God give the people the strength to stand up. This is the situation.”
SOT, Ismail Ozturk, Local whose house was on fire (Turkish): “The fire came, what can we do, we couldn’t save *inaudible*. We could barely save ourselves. All our money is gone. But thank good for this much. I don’t know, we suffered a lot of harm, I don’t know.”
