Turkey: Mugla locals and power plant workers evacuate by boat as wildfire spreads

Workers of the Kemerkoy coal-fired power plant in Milas, Mugla province, were forced to evacuate on Wednesday as wildfires reached the station.

Footage shows workers witnessing the incoming fire and locals being evacuated in the back of a truck at night, before being boarded onto a Turkish coast guard vessel in the village of Oren.

Strong winds created unfavourable conditions for containing the wildfire, which surrounded the perimeter of the power plant. Control over the fire surrounding the power plant was reportedly established on Thursday.

Fire crews have been battling the blazes raging on the Turkish Aegean Sea coast for the ninth day in a row.

More than 180 wildfires have charred massive areas of Turkey’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts this summer, killing eight people so far.
