Amid what Washington described as ‘the steps that have been taken by the PRC (People’s Republic of China) to crack down on human rights’ in Hong Kong, the US is now offering Chinese citizens from the territory a visa extension for the next 18 months to provide them with a ‘safe haven’. “In terms of what could happen 18 months from now, I’m certainly not going to get ahead of that. Obviously, our hope and our objective and our work on the international forum is to change the behaviour that is happening and the oppression that we’re seeing of the people in Hong Kong,” said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki in Washington DC on Thursday after US President Joe Biden had unveiled the initiative in a memo.
