White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki commented on a call between US President Joe Biden and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, during a press briefing in Washington DC, on Wednesday, in which the two leaders discussed the ongoing diplomatic spat stemming from a nuclear submarine deal with Australia.
“The president is hopeful this is a step in returning to normal in a long, important abiding relationship that the United States has with France,” Psaki said. “During the conversation, the president reaffirmed the strategic importance of France - French and European engagement, I should say, in the Indo-Pacific region, something that we look forward to continuing to work with them on. And as we said in the readout, the French ambassador will return to Washington next week and he will then start intensive work with US officials.”
France had recalled its ambassador after the US and the UK announced a deal to sell nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, supplanting a previous contract France had to sell its own submarines to Canberra.
Psaki also discussed the migrant crisis after Customs and Border Protection officers were filmed whipping Haitian migrants. The White House spokesperson called the video ‘horrific’ but defended the government’s mass deportation policy, which included multiple flights carrying hundreds of Haitian migrants back to Port-Au-Prince on Wednesday.
“Our border restrictions are being applied not just to Haitians, but to people who are coming irregularly to migrate to the country from anywhere - 90,000, more than 90,000 people were expelled in August,” she said.
Thousands of Haitian migrants have crossed the border in recent days as instability continues in Haiti following the assassination of their president and a devastating earthquake.
